The short answer
Disney+ shows error code 83 when it cannot play a video on the device or connection you are using. Its Help Centre says the cause is usually a device compatibility issue or a connection error: an unsupported device (including an emulator), an unsupported way of watching such as a device's web browser instead of the Disney+ app, or an unstable or slow internet connection. Switch to the Disney+ app on a supported device (or a supported, up-to-date browser on a computer), test your connection, then close and reopen the app and restart the device.
The message appears when you try to play a video:
Something went wrong. Please try again. If the problem persists, visit the Disney+ Help Centre (error code 83).
Why it happens
The official Disney+ article on error code 83 gives two families of cause, and says the list is not exhaustive ("possible causes include, but are not limited to"):
- An unsupported device or method of access. This covers devices Disney+ does not support, emulators, and watching in a web browser on a device where you should use the app. Disney+ gives that last one as its own example: playing a video in your device's web browser instead of the Disney+ app.
- An unstable or slow internet connection.
The article gives no more detailed technical reason than these two families, so this page does not either.
Which devices count as supported is listed in What devices are supported by Disney+?. It groups them as web browsers (subject to the browser requirements), mobile devices (Amazon Fire tablets, Android phones and tablets, Apple iPhones and iPads, Windows 10 and 11 tablets and computers), and TV-connected devices (Amazon Fire TV, Android TV devices, Apple TV 4th generation and later, Chromecast, Hisense smart TVs, LG webOS smart TVs, PlayStation, Samsung Tizen smart TVs, VIZIO SmartCast TVs and Xbox). The same page notes that device support and availability may vary in certain territories, so a device that works in one country is not guaranteed to be supported in yours.
For computers, the browser requirements page is strict about versions:
| Computer | Supported browsers (latest version only) | Operating system |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera | Windows 10 and newer |
| Mac | Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari | macOS 11 and newer |
| Chromebook | Chrome | ChromeOS (latest) |
An outdated browser, or a supported browser on an older operating system, falls outside that list and fits the "unsupported method" cause.
How to fix it
These are the steps the Disney+ error code 83 article gives, in its order, with the detail from the linked Disney+ pages.
Use a supported device or app. Launch the Disney+ app on a supported device, or open DisneyPlus.com on a computer with a supported configuration. If you were watching in a browser on a phone or tablet, install and use the Disney+ app instead. If you are on a computer, check the table above and update the browser. Browsers usually update automatically, but you can also update manually; in Safari, choose Safari in the menu bar, then About Safari, to see the version.
Check your internet connection. Disney+'s connection test page tells you to run a speed test and compare the result with its recommendations. On a computer or phone: open a web browser, go to
speedof.meor another speed tester, and select Start Test. On consoles the test is built in:PlayStation: Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection Xbox: Settings > Network > Network Settings > Test Network ConnectionOn an Apple TV, Disney+ suggests installing a speed test app from the App Store. On a Fire TV, a Samsung Tizen TV, an LG TV or a Hisense TV, open the device's web browser (on Fire TV that is the Silk Browser, installed from the Find tab) and run the test at
speedof.me. If the device has no browser or speed test app, run the test on another device standing close to it and connected to the same network.Relaunch the app or refresh the page, then try playing the video again in a few minutes. Disney+'s streaming guide adds: fully exit the app, along with other programs running in the background, before reopening it. In a computer browser, close and reopen the browser, or try a private/incognito window or a different browser.
Power down or restart your device, then reopen the Disney+ app.
If you cannot log in after restarting, follow Disney+'s separate login issues article, linked from the error code 83 page.
The error code 83 article adds one condition worth acting on: if your internet provider recently had a service outage, Disney+ strongly recommends power cycling your modem and router, meaning turning them off and restarting them.
If the error keeps coming back
The error code 83 article then points to Disney+'s How to fix streaming issues checklist. The steps not already covered above are:
- Update the device's operating system from its Settings page. Disney+ asks that the device runs the latest supported version of its operating system or platform.
- Clear the cached data from the device's Settings menu, or clear the browser cache on a computer.
- Uninstall and reinstall Disney+ to get the latest version. Reinstalling removes every download on that device, so you will need to download those titles again after logging back in.
- Check all components. HDMI cables and external displays must support high-bandwidth digital content; for 4K Ultra HD and HDR, the display must support HDCP 2.2. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cables to make sure they are seated properly. In a computer browser, check that JavaScript and cookies are enabled.
- Contact Disney+ from the Help Centre if every step fails.
Check that it worked
Play the same title that showed the error, on the same device. If it starts and keeps playing, the fix held. If you changed the device or switched from a browser to the app, play the title once more on the original setup only if you need to know which change mattered.
If the speed test result was the problem, run it again after restarting the router and compare it with Disney+'s recommendations before going back to the app.
Error code 83 on a connection that seems fine
Disney+ lists conditions that affect streaming even when your connection is strong: the distance between the streaming device and the Wi-Fi router, the number of devices connected to your network, and an outage or network issue at your internet provider. Its streaming guide also notes that IPv6 is not fully supported on Disney+ at the moment and may lead to trouble streaming; Disney+ refers you to your device maker's instructions for disabling IPv6 rather than giving one setting for every device.
A quick way to tell a network problem from a Disney+ one, which Disney+ itself suggests, is to try other apps on the same device. If they struggle too, Disney+ puts it down to poor connectivity and sends you to your internet service provider. If the trouble is in another app on the same network, those apps have their own fixes: Roblox error code 279 for a game that cannot connect to Roblox and a printer showing as offline in Windows 11 for a networked printer Windows cannot reach (a storage problem such as the Steam disk write error is a different case).
The Disney+ error code 83 article lists error codes 42, 73, 91, 92 and 142 as having related causes or similar troubleshooting steps; check each one's own Help Centre article.
The official guidance treats error code 83 as a mismatch between where you are watching and what Disney+ supports, or a connection that cannot keep up, not as an account fault. Start with the Disney+ app on a supported device and a speed test; if both check out, the streaming checklist and then Disney+ support are the remaining steps.
