The short answer
Error code 279 means the Roblox app could not open a network connection to the game's server. Roblox Support lists the causes as a network problem, a firewall or security program blocking Roblox, blocked UDP ports on the router, or a damaged Roblox installation. Try a different internet connection first, then allow Roblox through your firewall and antivirus, then reinstall Roblox. If you are a young player, ask the adult who looks after the computer or the Wi-Fi to help with the firewall and router steps.
The message mentions error code 279 and an ID number. Roblox's own help article is titled "Error Code 279/ID 17: Failed to connect to the Game".
Why it happens
According to the Roblox Support article on error 279, the error "usually happens on PCs, Macs, and mobile devices when the client application and servers are having trouble establishing a network connection". In other words, Roblox started, but it could not reach the server that hosts the experience you tried to join.
Roblox's General Connection Problems page names "ID=17 Failure" messages as a sign of a connection problem and gives these reasons:
- Firewall. Roblox says this is "very frequently a firewall problem". Many antivirus and internet security programs control which apps may use the internet, and by default they may not allow Roblox.
- A slow or unstable connection. A low-bandwidth or inconsistent wireless connection can also cause it, though Roblox says this happens in very few cases. Roblox recommends at least 4-8 Mb/s for a single-use household.
- Blocked ports. The Firewall and Router Issues article explains that the Roblox client does not use one fixed port. It picks a free port for each experience session, so a router that blocks UDP packets on any port can cause problems.
- A problem with the experience itself. An experience can contain a bad script or too many objects, which stops it running properly. Only its creator can repair that.
- A damaged installation. The error 279 article recommends reinstalling Roblox because it "helps clear any corrupted files and data" and updates the app to the latest version.
How to fix it
Work through these steps in order and test after each one. Roblox Support asks you to try each step "one at a time, in order". The same order (connection first, then the device, then security software) is how a printer that Windows 11 shows as offline is traced too, since both are a device that cannot reach the other end of the network.
Try a different internet connection. Every platform section of the error 279 article includes this step. On a computer, switch from Wi-Fi to a wired cable if you can; Roblox says this rules out the wireless connection. On a phone or tablet, try another Wi-Fi network. If the error stays on every connection you try, Roblox recommends contacting your internet provider.
Check the date and time (phones, tablets and Chromebooks). For iOS, Android, Amazon Fire OS and ChromeOS, Roblox says to open Settings, find the date and time settings and make sure they are accurate. Roblox explains that this "helps keep the system in sync with the servers".
Close Roblox fully and restart the device. On mobile, Roblox suggests force-closing the app from the recent apps view, then switching the device off, waiting 30 seconds and switching it back on.
Allow Roblox through Windows Firewall. Do not switch the firewall off. Microsoft's page on the risks of allowing apps through Windows Firewall gives these steps:
Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall > Change settings > tick the box next to the app, or select "Allow another app" and enter its pathYou might be asked for an administrator password, which is a good moment to ask a parent or guardian. Microsoft also warns never to allow an app you do not recognise.
Add Roblox to your antivirus allow list. Roblox's antivirus restrictions article says to update your antivirus first, because the vendor may already have fixed the problem. If that does not help, add Roblox to the program's exceptions list. On Windows, Roblox gives this folder for exclusions:
C:\Users\(Your Windows Username)\AppData\Local\RobloxThe menus differ between antivirus products, so check your program's help pages. Leave the antivirus switched on.
Close other programs that hook into games. The same Roblox article asks you to look for third-party programs that interfere with the client, naming "auto-clickers" and "other game launchers" as examples. If another launcher is giving you trouble too, the Steam disk write error guide covers a separate download problem with Steam.
Check the router ports. Roblox says its port range "is currently UDP 49152 - 65535" and that keeping these ports open should let Roblox connect through your router. Look in your router's manual for how to unblock them, or, as Roblox suggests for DSL modems that block ports, call your internet provider. On a school or family network, leave this to whoever manages it. Microsoft notes that adding an app to the firewall's allowed list is generally safer than opening ports, so do step 4 first.
If you play in a web browser, check the browser. Roblox's connection article says to use an up-to-date Chrome, Firefox or Microsoft Edge and to check that the browser's security settings allow Roblox. Roblox also says ad blockers "can stop an experience from fully loading". Its General Website Issues page explains how to disable all add-ons, then turn them back on one at a time to find the one causing the problem.
Reinstall Roblox and clear its data. On Windows, the error 279 article says to uninstall Roblox first, from Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10, or from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features on Windows 11. Then press Win+R, type
cmd, press Enter and run these two commands:cd AppData\Local rmdir /s RobloxType
yand press Enter when asked to confirm. These commands delete only the Roblox folder. Restart the computer and install Roblox again. On a Mac, move the Roblox app to the Bin (Trash), then check that macOS has given Roblox permission under Privacy & Security. On iOS and Android, delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store or Google Play Store.
Check that it worked
Open Roblox and join the same experience that showed error 279. Then join a second, popular experience. If both load, the fix worked.
If only one experience fails, the issue is probably that experience. Roblox says a bad script or too many objects can stop it running, and only the creator can fix it. If every experience fails on one network but works on another, the block is on that network (a firewall, a router or the provider). If a different app on the same device shows its own error code, such as Disney+ error code 83, follow that app's guide: the codes are not shared between services.
ID = 17 compared with other ID numbers
Roblox Support documents error 279 with ID = 17, and its connection article lists "ID=17 Failure" as a sign of a connection problem. If your message shows a different ID number with error 279, Roblox's help centre does not document what that number means, so this guide does not guess. The error code is still 279, so the steps above are the documented starting point. If the error comes back after you have tried every step, contact Roblox Customer Support. Include your Roblox username, the exact error message with its ID number, your device model, your OS version and the steps that lead to the error, as Roblox asks.
When none of this helps
Roblox lists two more limits in its error codes overview: virtual machines and cloud-based computers are not supported, and mobile devices that are not running their original, updated operating system are not supported. Its hardware and operating system requirements add that on a Windows PC, Roblox installs on 64-bit versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Error 279 is a connection error, not a ban or an account problem. Roblox Support points to: the network, a firewall or antivirus that has not allowed Roblox, a router blocking UDP ports, or an installation that needs replacing. Start with the safe steps (another connection, the date and time, a restart), allow Roblox rather than disabling your protection, and leave router changes to whoever manages the network.
